Week 18 :: Project -- Book Binding

So, for my publication design class I digitally typeset the book A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. After typesetting and printing the 3 part book I made covers for the books and bound them by hand. There is a good hand binding tutorial found on: http://jamesdarrow.deviantart.com/art/Bookbinding-Tutorial-292237490

We used the same sort of technique to bind the book. If you are doing a cloth cover then use the link above. If you print on cloth or paper you can use the following procedure. Measure book board to the size of the front, back and spine of the book. Put these measurements onto an InDesign File. Add 3/16 of an inch between the front, spine, and back book boards. Center the rectangles and make sure the cover artwork is also centered and will align with the rectangles on the back. (The rectangles will be a guide to place the book board correctly as well as straight. It will be printed on the backside of the cover artwork.) Add an additional 3/4 of an inch to all 4 sides to allow room for folding over. Trim a right angle out of each corner. Score each side fold with a bone folding tool. Use spray adhesive on the side of the paper that has the rectangles and place book board onto the paper using the rectangles as guides. Press out any bubbles with an extra piece of flat book board. Make sure it is completely dry and that your book tape is glued onto each end of the book before applying the cover. Fold over the extra edges of the paper and glue down. Glue the first page of the book onto the book board and Viola! Let it dry and put weight on top of the book over night.
