Wisdom Teeth Removal Tips and Tricks

Brace yourself for my wisdom teeth story and suggestions for filling your belly! Enjoy!

Okay so I got my wisdom teeth out recently and although my mouth was sore for quite a while, I recovered rather quickly and I had no bruising and very minimal swelling. I followed the directions of rinsing with salt water that was recommended by the oral surgeon. I was put under with anesthesia and the surgery took a couple hours and I had three wisdom teeth.

The worst part was the stiffness by far. I have tmj, and so basically my jaw sucks at working, but not being able to open my mouth wide enough to pop it caused severe pain and stiffness. I used a heating rice bag, not warmed up too hot, and put that on my jaw in the morning when I woke up and then at night before bed. (and once in the middle if the day if needed. It was a nice alternative to freezing cold ice packs. But I did use ice packs alternating sides of my mouth about every 15 minutes for the first few days.) I also chewed a half piece of gum and massaged my jaw muscles frequently with my finger tips.
For me, eating wasn't really a problem, I just chewed with my front teeth and although it would take me almost two hours to eat a meal, I would just make sure I always made time to rinse my mouth after a meal.

Here is what I ate:
Strawberry shake (thanks for bringing that over Kelcie!!)
Cup of Noodle Soup
Pudding
Yogurt and Fried egg
Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese
Cheesy Mashed Potatoes and corn bowl (the corn was rather tricky to eat, so be careful with that.)

-I tried eating tapioca pudding and I threw it away because the little balls of tapioca would slide in my mouth and I had a hard time controlling where they went and I didn't want then to end up in my sockets.

Cheese quesadilla
Pasta Shells and Alfredo sauce

-Malt o meal hot cereal and toast, not the best idea, because it has really small particles and it's hard to get them all from going to the sockets.

Mashed potatoes and green beans and a tiny little sliver of roast
PB & J Sandwich
Panda Express but NOT RICE I got chow mien. rice is a bad idea to eat
French Toast
In between all of that I drank LOTS of water and ate creamies cut into little bites, otter pops and ice cream and a few lemon heaven's (sprite with lemon and vanilla) with the good sonic ice

other suggestions

TO EAT:
eggs lots of eggs
yogurt
pudding
applesauce for those who like it
lots of soups
Soft or soup soaked breads
Spaghetti squash
any squash
sweet potatoes
mashed potatoes
baked potatoes
jello (eww, but hey if you like it..)
bean burritos
pastas
quesadilla (warmed in the microwave so it doesn't get crunchy)
things with protein
After like the first 2-3 days I could really eat anything as long as I ate Slowly and cut it up into small small bites before trying to eat it. Yeah it may take forever to eat it, but hey it won't be another pudding cup, so that's a bonus.

NOT TO EAT:
Rice
Salad (very difficult to chew with front teeth and the toppings could find the way to the sockets)
chips
spicy foods
tapioca pudding
oats
candies
anything super hot

  1. My son needs his wisdom teeth removed soon. It is great to see an experienced person provide a menu list of foods to eat and to avoid. This will help me plan the week of recovery for him. I hope that he likes some of these items you've provided on the list.
